Down Syndrome Awareness Month

Dear Patients and Colleagues,

October is identified as ‘Awareness Month’ for many, many health related complexities.

While one is as important as the next, none struck me as much as Down Syndrome Awareness Month. In my own personal experience with patients over the years, no parents are more expressive of their gratitude for the often incredible results in their children than the parents of Downs Syndrome children. There are over 109 research articles publicly posted associated with Celiac Disease and Down Syndrome. Just look at these few…..

A number of epidemiologic studies originating in countries such as Canada, Netherlands,Sweden, Italy, and Australia have recognized a prevalence of CD varying from 1% to l7% in individuals with Downs Syndrome. Clin Pediatr (Phila). 2001 May;40(5):249-52

The prevalence of confirmed CD in our patients with DS is at least 96 times greater than the prevalence of CD in the general US pediatric population. Clin Pediatr (Phila). 2001 May;40(5):249-52

…preliminary data from the United States reporting a prevalence rate of 4% to 5% of CD in DS Acta Paediatr. 1999 Sep;88(9):953-6.

Please get these children tested. We offer the most sensitive and specific testing available, not your “general” lab tests that most physicians run. If you need to order these tests, please contact our office. Thank you.
